Hammadah al Hamra 346

(Formerly known as Ghadamis)

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6)

Discovery: 2019, in Gharyan (Libya)

Total mass (TKW): 100 Kg

Coordinates: 29°36'29.3"N, 13°22'03.4"E

Weight: 7,5 g / 0,26 oz

Measurements: 23 x 21 x 13 mm / 0,90 x 0,82 x 0,51"

Information: It was found in 2019 in the Hammadah al Hamra desert, following the sighting and audible detection of a brilliant fireball in the Jabal al Gharbi region on August 26, 2018—raising the possibility that the two events were linked. Hundreds of fragments were recovered, with a total mass exceeding 100 kg; many featured a distinctive, fresh black fusion crust and regmaglypts formed during atmospheric entry.

Its classification—L6, S5, W0—indicates an ordinary chondrite that is highly metamorphosed and has undergone intense shock, yet shows virtually no terrestrial weathering. The preserved minerals and metals allow for the study of the thermal and impact processes experienced by its parent body prior to its arrival on Earth. HaH 346—initially marketed under the name "Ghadamis"—thus represents an intriguing fragment of exceptionally fresh extraterrestrial material, with its potential link to the 2018 fireball adding further appeal to the specimen.
