Diogenite breccia (HED) Acondrite

Weight: 43g / 0.095lb

Piece Measurements: 4.1 x 3.1 x 2.5 / 1.61 x 1.22 x 0.98 "

Diogenites, along with Howardites and Eucrites are meteorites from Vesta, an asteroid located in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter. This group of meteorites are known as HED.

Diogenites are of plutonic origin , meaning they were once lava, but instead of being spewed out by a volcano and cooling at the surface, they slowly cooled underground. This slow cooling allowed the creation of large crystals, often green in color, which can be seen on its surface.

One billion years ago, Vesta suffered catastrophic meteor impacts that pierced through its crust and into its mantle. These large impacts caused material from its inner layers to be expelled into space. But not all the material stayed in the asteroid belt. Disturbances in the belt brought some of these rocks to Earth.

This meteorite does not belong to the well-known 7831 fall, but rather a later one. They were found in 2019 and are currently pending classification.

As a curiosity, note that 5% of the meteorites that fall on Earth come from Vesta.
