Stromatolites are laminar structures formed by microorganisms, mainly cyanobacteria and CaCO3 precipitated due to the metabolic activity of these organisms. They are porous rock structures produced by the growth of cyanobacteria that generate a mucilaginous layer in which carbonates precipitate and where sediments become trapped.
